Yoshiaki Koizumi discusses plans for Super Mario on Wii U

By Jack Taylor – 7 August 2011

Yoshiaki Koizumi, the director of Super Mario 3D Land, has talked for the first time about ideas for a Super Mario title for Wii U.

Speaking to Official Nintendo Magazine, Koizumi admitted that he had too many ideas for such a game, claiming that he was going to have to cut them down in order to create an "enjoyable" game.

As it turns out, I have too many ideas at the moment for Mario game on Wii U ... I'm going to have to start narrowing them down and thinking about which ideas might work well together so that the whole system will be an enjoyable experience rather than a hodgepodge of ideas!

The Super Mario 3D Land director also discussed how new technology often provided inspiration for new Super Mario titles such as Super Mario Sunshine, released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002.

Another example of looking at the technology and that being an inspiration for game design is when I was working on Super Mario Sunshine. The first time that I touched the GameCube controller, immediately I thought that the shoulder buttons could be triggers for a water gun. That's the sort of thing I have idle dreams about which have eventually coalesced into a game.

The full feature on Wii U can be found in the September issue of the UK's Official Nintendo Magazine, which is on sale now.

Surely that's old news by now...
